Two dimensions govern a hangar and both derive from wingspan: the clear span inside and the net width of the door.
The door is the most demanding part of the building. One full edge of the façade is cleared of structure and the load of that edge is transferred to the sides and the roof — as much as the column-free span itself, the ability to open one of its faces entirely enters the calculation.
Hangar projects are therefore designed together with the wide-span series: the 45–60 m series and the barrel vault systems are the structural counterpart of this use. The exact span and door dimensions are set by the aircraft and the site conditions.
Buildings are verified with advanced static and dynamic calculation software; galvanised sections target long service life on sites carrying corrosion risk, such as coastal and high-humidity locations.
