Hybrid Steel Structures
Heavy steel primary structure working together with a light CFS superstructure; for crane-served production facilities.

Hybrid steel is a division of labour between two load-bearing systems in the same building: heavy steel below, CFS above.
The reason for the split is the nature of the load. A crane runway beam has to carry the weight of the travelling crane and its braking forces; that is work for hot-rolled heavy steel sections. The roof carries its own weight, snow and wind — there the governing factor is not strength but self-weight, and a light CFS lattice system crosses the same span with far less steel.
The critical point is where the two meet. The transition plates between the heavy steel column head and the CFS roof are designed with load transfer calculated for the differing behaviour of the two systems.
The gain is twofold: the load capacity of heavy steel is retained while roof steel tonnage and erection time both fall.
