S4 is the step where span changes the material. At forty-five metres, increasing truss depth alone is no longer enough; the connection points come under load, and that is where superior-strength special steel members and high-strength bolted connection plates take over.
At this scale demountability becomes a distinct engineering subject. If a hangar or exhibition building is to be re-erected on another site, the connection detail must be designed so that dismantling keeps material loss to a minimum — something a welded system cannot offer.
If a clear span beyond forty-five metres is required, the series changes: CFS-S5 reaches sixty metres and the barrel vault systems reach eighty.
